Talk: Beyond JSON - Interoperable RIAs over XMPP (ROX)
Ian Paterson will speak (spoke) about ROX at FOSDEM 2007 on February 24th.
Synopsis: The hacker-friendly documentation generated by the Jabber standards community solves most of the issues faced by distributed application developers.
Rich Internet Application (RIA) hackers (who may have been using JSON, Comet or AJAX for browser-server communications) can use XMPP to build on top of the wealth of existing Jabber applications and to interoperate with RIAs produced by other developers. RIAs can connect to Jabber servers via a choice of two browser-friendly HTTP streaming standards. BOAH extends the Comet technique, while BOSH is a novel mature protocol that passes through more proxies and enables efficient cross-domain streaming.
ClientSide partners with Jabber Inc to supply Web client to U.S. government customers
July 26, 2006 - Lisbon, Portugal - ClientSide and Jabber Inc. today announced the immediate availability of Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0 for U.S. Federal Government customers. The zero footprint client is based on ClientSide's Chatterbox Platform and communicates directly with Jabber Extensible Communications Platform (Jabber XCP) servers by running inside a user's Web browser via Asynchronous JavaScript and XML (AJAX).
"For many customers, specifically within the Federal Government where Jabber, Inc. has substantial traction, they want to quickly deploy standards-based secure and compliant instant messaging (IM) and other presence services without having to touch every desktop," said Joe Hildebrand, chief technology officer of Jabber, Inc. "Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0 delivers the functionality of Jabber XCP IM, text conferencing, and more without having to install anything beyond a Web browser on the desktop."
Based on ClientSide's flagship Chatterbox client, Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0 is a full-featured IM client that requires no installation and is compatible with open standards such as the Extensible Messaging and Presence Protocol (XMPP) - an emerging standard in the Federal Government.
"AJAX enables Chatterbox and now Jabber Messenger for the Web 5.0 to offer a true zero footprint experience that is easily administered, runs securely in any environment, consumes a minimum of bandwidth, and will work anywhere a Web browser is present," said ClientSide's Founder and Chief Executive Officer, Ian Paterson. "Add to this the ability to integrate the client experience into customer portals, Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption, and the ability to customize features - not just skins - and you have a solution that is well suited to the requirements of Federal Government customers."
ABOUT CLIENTSIDE
Since 1998 ClientSide has pioneered the use of AJAX and DHTML technologies to develop Web pages that interact like responsive PC applications. Few others have been in the AJAX applications business as long as ClientSide, whose flagship product, Chatterbox, is the only fully-featured standards-based IM client that needs no installation. Chatterbox is compatible with standard open protocols including XMPP, third-party servers, and other IM networks. ClientSide was founded by Ian Paterson, its current chief executive officer, Jabber Software Foundation Council Member, and principle architect and author of different standards-track protocols, including the truly innovative XEP-0124 (XMPP/HTTP Binding) and XEP-0116 (Encrypted Sessions).
